The Hawaii Unified Construction Department specializes in design-build applications for tenant improvements and remodels. We recently completed an entire showroom renovation for the Tony Auto Group at their Honda facility in the Waipio Auto Complex. The project was challenging from the beginning, as Tony Group and Honda were not entirely on the same page regarding scope and what could be done to the facility to encompass all of the design features Honda wanted implemented. Our Construction team enlisted the help of a partner architect firm and created a design that was within the Tony Group’s budget, but also satisfied Honda with all the appropriate design features necessary for their acceptance of the project. Hawaii Unified was able to facilitate the role of a neutral third party to help both sides come to an agreement on the best course of action for the remodel. Once plans were agreed upon, created, and permitted, Hawaii Unified went to work on developing a phase plan for the open remodel construction schedule.
Keep in mind that and active auto dealership cannot close even for one day, as the sales losses would be so great that it would negate the benefit of a remodel. Hawaii Unified had to develop a phase plan that would keep the dealership open during the entire remodel, and all the work needed to be performed at night so that daily operations were not disrupted. Part of the pre-construction planning was to create barricades and facades that would hide the active construction during the day. Our goal was to make as little impact as possible to the sales operations and make sure the customers hardly noticed there was construction occurring during the daytime hours. We successfully completed the remodel in 6 phases, moving seamlessly from one section of work to the other, with little to no effect on customer sales. Our skilled tradesmen executed the work flawlessly, from tile setting to painting, and demolition to drywall and interior office reconfiguration, Hawaii Unified teams worked together to stay ahead of schedule. Our finish work included placing all the Honda specified fixtures and creating unique items specific to this dealership, like a trophy case, and a glass-partitioned customer waiting lounge with coffee bar and flat screen TV’s. Our commercial door team also added upgraded grills and gates to the cashier’s offices and installed a custom auto sliding glass door that could facilitate the entry and exit of vehicles into the showroom.
